Halloween Fun in Westport

The last week has been full of halloween fun here in Westport!

John and Cynthia have once again done a fabulous job of getting our businesses out to support the Children's Wish Foundation. Their Random Acts of Pumpkins saw a wall of pumpkins shouting out Act 4 of this annual festival.

Nineteen businesses got 5 pumpkins each and created a display in their windows or front porches. From spooky to literary, the themes were all done with creative endeavour.

Here at Artemisia, The Picture of Dorian Gray became The
Portrait of Dorian Pumpkin.....

Despite a fall from grace, the old man was put back together
with staples and tape, and looked none the worse for the
wear!

Kids came to do pumpkin carving here too and came up
with some delightful designs for their front porches.
I wish I had thought to take some photos. Although I do
miss the pumpkins that lined the street and harbour last
year, this year was lots of fun too.

Addenda to Fibre Show...

We now have several workshops lined up during our special Focus on Fibre month.

Barb Lukas will be teaching great workshops on
felt beads and rug hooking on
November 8 and 9.

Sylvia Naylor, who does exquisite work with a
sewing machine, will be teaching a
special workshop on November 16.

Margot Miller's specialty of painting and
silkscreening on fabric and textiles will
be held on November 22 and 23.

All the workshops run from 10 am to 4 pm. Fees: $75.00 per day
plus a materials fee.
Coffee and tea will be available with snacks during the workshops.
Bring your own lunch, although there will be a short lunch break
and there are several good restaurants close by.

FOCUS ON FIBER

We are gearing up for our very special show/exhibition in November

Focus on Fiber ~ A Focus on this Amazing Art Form

A number of fiber artists will be at Artemisia from November 5 through 27, showing,
displaying and selling their creative endeavors.

Carolyn Barnett creates handloomed artwear and accessories
in an array of dazzling colors. Carolyn will be demonstrating
her colorful work on Sunday,
November 12 at the opening reception.

Jeff Gill creates paintings using fabric and fiber as his medium. Jeff will be
showing us how he works during the opening reception on November 12.

Barbara Simard also uses fabric as her painting medium.

Barb Lukas is an artist in both rug hooking and art dolls.
Come join Barb for a great workshop on felted beads and
another on rug hooking, November8 and 9.

We are trying very hard to bring to the folks in Westport and area
a great program of classes and workshops.
Initial enthusiasm from our first days here seems to have dwindled,
however I find it hard to believe that no one has any desire to learn
new things. Bonnie and Georgia together have a wealth of experience
and teaching skills to create a wonderful program for you all.

We must say we have had some very enthusiastic participants, but
no where near the number that have asked us to have classes over
the four years we have been here.

We welcome suggestions at artemisia@kingston.net

Please let us know how to make classes that you would like to come to, and
participate in and learn.

Is It Really August Already???

Folks keep telling me that the days go by faster as you get older.... well, I certainly believe that these days! ! !

Tomorrow is August 1, a civic holiday here in Canada, and hopefully a busy one for us in the gallery.
So far this season has been a good one, despite the hot and humid days. Fortunately we have air conditioning, so our customers also got a little relief from the blistering heat.

We have a superb line up of activities and events for August; we sure hope you will be able to join us for them all, or even for just one or two....

August 7 Come and make your own paper with Bonnie. Papermaking workshop from 10 am to 4 pm. Call to register and for details.

August 9 and 16 from 1 pm to 3:30 pm KIDS! Two Wonderful Puppetry Workshops for Kids. They will make the puppets and write and perform their little show in the tent at the end of the day. Please call us at

August 12 from 11 am to 3 pm Come and watch Stephen Rothwell create one of his loosely representational watercolour paintings. Enjoy watching Stephen fling water about and end up with a marvelous work!

August 14 If you were into making mud pies earlier in your life, come and do it again and create an ornament or stepping stone for your garden with Georgia at the Cement Garden Art Workshop. 10 am to 4 pm. wear old clothes! ! !

August 21 Our premier event of the Season! Our 4th Annual Poetry Reading featuring nine local poets. Audrey Ogilvie, Anders Carson, Elizabeth Greene, Eric Folsom, Tara Kainer, Jason Heroux, Susan Olding, Jeanette Lynes and Jeanne Patric will enthrall you with lively and thoughtful readings from their work. 2 pm to 5 pm, tea and scones at intermission when you will also have the opportunity to meet and talk with the poets.

August 27 from 11 am to 3 pm meet Heather Assaf, printmaker. Heather will be sharing with you some of her methods and materials she uses to create her amazing prints.

August 27 10 am to 4 pm Make your own Kaleidoscope. Workshop with Georgia in which you will learn about mirrors and then finish the outer with creations of your own design. FUN

New Season at Artemisia

Christmas has long gone and the new year is well underway. I regret that I have had so much
trouble keeping this blog up to date, but I resolve to do better now that spring is here and
there is much to say.

We are delighted to welcome back our returning artists -- Stephen Rothwell, Stuart Arnett, Jane
Thelwell, Gera Chandler, Tina Holden, Bill Neddow, Valerie Gujban, Gary Webster, Colin Hamer,
Ann Gruchy, Heather Assaf, Antony Powell, Patrick Skidd, Abigail Connell, Brian Swain, and
Steven Boyd.

To our new artists -- Miranda Scott, Dawn Burnham, Denis Larouche, Shirley Mancino, and
Stefan Duerst -- a very warm welcome.

As soon as my camera is all charged up you will be able to see works by all these artists.

Please also go to our Bottles of Hope blog for all the latest news on our campaign to donate
1,000 Bottles created by folks in the Westport/Perth area to our regional cancer centers.
We had the very good fortune to have a colleague from Montreal, Louise Gagne, donate over 100
Bottles made by her clay groups there. Many many thanks, Louise! ! ! see her photos on
our BOH blog also.

I want especially to thank our artist Gera Scott Chandler for her support of our gallery. Here
from BC on a visit and for attending MPCG, Gera posted this delightful story of Artemisia.

Just a few days now...

Good snowy morning to all!

We had a fun filled day on December 5 when Santa came to Artemisia. Jolly old fellow that he is, he enjoyed meeting the children that came to tell of
their wishes for him to leave under their trees come
Saturday morning.

Hannah and Ethan Cohen were quite thrilled to see Santa,
and to be gifted with some super art materials by Ellie,
Santa's helper, seated beside him.
Thanks, Jason and family for your support; we look forward
to seeing you again in the new year.

Halloween Magic -- 2,400 Carved Pumpkins

All lit up, despite the rain and miserable cold, a huge number of folks came out to see the night time results that John Pringle and friends made by setting up the first of the 2,400 carved pumpkins --- all in support of the Children's Wish Foundation. This is the third and certainly
most pumpkinly year yet! ! !

don't do justice to the magic that occurred that evening.

Beside our wonderfully witchy and ghoully porch, made and set up by Donna and her daughter Ellie, and our student worker, Kiara, sit a number of pumpkins.

Here is a view toward the lake and you can just about see the glow of all those faces way into the distance.

Below on the right, is a photo without flash, hard to see but might give you some small indication of the magic of the sight.

These amazing pumpkins actually climbed up into this tree next to our library!

I can't wait until next year, and I hope all and sundry in this area put it on their calendar for

Happenings at Artemisia. . .

Fall and winter are coming... and here at Artemisia we have finalized one of our activities which will be ongoing over the winter into spring.

Bottles of Hope
Georgia, our polymer clay artist, has initiated a campaign to challenge the town of Westport and area to make and donate 1,000 Bottles of Hope between now and May, 2011. Polymer clay artists the world over make and donate these bottles to local cancer treatment centers. They are given to patients with a wish and a hope for successful treatment and full recovery.

Our addition to the Westport Music Festival

Saturday, August 14, 2010, Westport, Ontario greeted hundreds of folks who came to hear great music. Bands as well as individual singers graced several venues around the town from morning until evening, closing with a great show at The Cove.

We are very delighted to add here a video of our own addition to this music festival, Stephen Rothwell--one of our artists-- and his very talented daughters along with Shaun Seaman -- also one of our artists -- on drums, played to eager and happy listeners. Our back porch provides a neat little stage for performing artists. (Please excuse the shaky videographer!) i wonder if that is why i cannot get it to upload????? stay tuned, i will get it to work.....but here is a still from that video...

We have also had Valery Lloyd-Watts perform there, and hope to have more in the future.
We are in process of arranging a performance by Vorasek, a young band from Kingston.
We will keep you posted here...

Even though the days are flying by, summer events are ongoing here at Artemisia.

First of all, to all of you who missed the concert by Valery, you surely missed a great
afternoon of wonderful piano music. Valery is such a talented pianist and such an
amazing performer, we are delighted that the afternoon was such a success.
I am posting here a short video of a very small but delightful part of the afternoon.

That was a small segment of a piece called Run-Run by O. Pinto, something we here
at Artemisia know how to do very well!!!

Here is another wonderful piece -- Nola, which I lovingly dedicate to Margaret. I hope
you are listening, 'mum'. (sorry about this, I must learn how to make it a bit smaller in order to upload it.)

And a very very special thanks to Valery Lloyd-Watts for sharing her passionate love of music with and for us.

We have also had several of our artists spend the day with us... very successfully I might
add. Shirley White, Shaun Seaman, Barbara Lukas and Stephen Rothwell have all delighted
the town with demonstrations of their working with their brushes, fabrics and paints.

It seems to me a bit ironic that the first day of summer is the longest day of the year, and with the day afterward each day becomes shorter again. So, despite the copious amount of rain we have had the last couple of weeks, and despite the chilly 12 degree morning today, summer is finally here.

And we have some memorable events coming your way.

It is hard to believe that it is nearly the end of May. Here at Artemisia we have been very busy planning a summer of visual and aural treats for our loyal customers.

First things first ---

The month of June will see another retrospective
exhibit of the works of James Henderson Boyd, 1929 - 2002,
noted Canadian artist and fun-loving pedagogue!

Original etchings and prints by Boyd will be on display and for
sale from June 8 - 30, 2010.

works. We are now open Monday through Sunday from
10 am to 5 pm.

What's New for us in 2010!

We are moving!

We are happy to announce a new home for Artemisia Art Gallery and Art Services at 7 Spring Street, just around the corner from our current location.

We are looking to expanding our services area. Donna will be looking forward to serving your graphic and sign design needs; Bonnie your art conservation and restoration needs; and Georgia your picture framing needs from our new and bigger space.

Artemisia Art Gallery will occupy the main floor front of the house and the art services will have a new wing come summer/fall.

Please do come and see our new location. We will be having our grand opening in April and will look forward to seeing you there.

Where has the summer gone?

I have been meaning to update this blog for several weeks now, but with house finishing and trying to sell my house, I have been quite busy.

We did have a wonderful day with carver Brian Swain. I shall try to upload the short video I took of Brian carving.

IT'S OUR BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!

June 21, the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, marks the first birthday of
Artemisia Art Gallery and Art Services.

We have been busy with preparations for our new season and are happy to announce some special happenings for that day... draw for 5% to 40% off your purchase!

So come back this week to see just what we have to offer -- birthday prices and cool refreshments!!!

There have also been some changes to our schedule of workshops and events due to
alterations in our timetables. Georgia is very busy preparing her house for sale, so she is not available for classes until July. Therefore, the watercolor sessions planned for Sundays and Thursdays in June and July have been cancelled and rescheduled, see below.

Starting in July, however, watercolor sessions will be held every Thursday evening at Artemisia's workshop from 5 to 7 pm. We will learn and share techniques and also do some plein air painting and sketching. So plan to come and join me and splash your way through some fun watercolor sessions. Our open studio sessions are still going on, Wednesdays from 1 - 3 pm come and join Bonnie and get some drawing and painting tips.

A NEW SEASON IS COMING. . .

We are proud and happy to announce the coming of a
new season here at Artemisia Art Gallery and
Art Services in Westport, Ontario.

In May we will be featuring the LAND O LAKES ARTISANS GUILD in an exclusive show and sale of many fine items, handcrafted to perfection for you and your home. There will be works of fine art -- paintings and sculpture -- and works of fine craft -- pottery, woodturning, jewelry, fiber art and some wonderfully unique works by these talented artisans.

This show will run from May 8 to May 25, 2009 with an opening reception on May 9 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm. Come on in and meet the Land O Lakes Artisans!

On March 14, 2009 we were featured on Regional Contact, and would like to thank Kathie Donovan for choosing us and doing such a wonderful show for us. We have had many compliments on both the gallery and our work and stories, so a huge thanks to Kathie and Pete and Randy for our marvelous and fantastic "15 minutes of fame"!!!

We have just joined the Chamber of Commerce, attended the AGM, learned about and met the owners of our sister and brother businesses here in this lovely village on the Rideau Canal, now a World Heritage site.

We hope to join our fellow business owners in providing lots of great reasons to come to Westport-- great countryside, wonderful swimming and superb spots for picnics -- along with shopping at some very fine stores, including one with terrific all natural ice cream!!!

We have been busy jurying for the coming season and will have some photos here shortly of the new works available beginning in May. Lots of wonderful and colorful feel good items for you to peruse.

We are also planning to have rainy day activities this summer for youth and adults -- come on in on a rainy day and splash about with paints and create some unique work!!! but mostly

Artemisia Owners Business Women of the Year in Westport

I am proud and happy to announce that we won the title and I especially want to thank all our customers and artists for their votes!

Yesterday we did the interview for the story. The reporter, Laura, from the Ottawa Media Group, representing the Perth Courier and their adjunct newspapers, took a number of photos, but the favorite seemed to be one with moxie!

Three moxies, that is, delightful little sculptures by our artist Gera Scott Chandler. Gera is a polymer clay artist whose whimsical and wonderful work is available at the Gallery.

Come back again soon to see some photos and to read more in the ongoing story, as CTV's Kathie Donovan has agreed to have us on Regional Contact as three artist entrepreneurs! Date of airing will be here when we find out when that will be.

Open Studios now going on. . .

I am a few days late in updating this blog, so i hope i can just cut and paste our January newsletter as it has all the information about our new open studios. a bit more explanation however ---

so that our loyal followers can have an opportunity to participate in various art mediums, we now have a weekly open studio to which any and all are welcome to come and play with any medium, although each week will have a focus medium. each session is planned for two hours, but may run a bit longer when interest is high. for a very modest sum one can attend these sessions and perhaps learn some new techniques which will help us determine workshops that our customers would like to attend.

so please, if you are interested, come out to one or more of our open studios, have a great time and learn some new art techniques!

Here at Artemisia we are planning to help you fill up these cold and dreary days with creative and inspiring learning activities where artists can meet and work together.
So come on over to Artemisia and stretch you creative spirit! Limited instruction will be available, depending on the topic of the day. The Little Sign Shop
Donna Larocque, our graphic artist par excellence, will be here to fill all your graphic needs – from logo design, commercial and residential signage of all kinds, interior and exterior murals, illustrations and so much more! Come in and view Donna’s great work on our own Artemisia sign work, along with other samples of her murals and signs.

Art Conservation
Bonnie McLean, our accomplished art conservator, will consult with you about how to keep your works of art in tip top condition. It is very important to the value of your paintings, sculptures, and other works of fine art to keep them clean and well looked after.
Bonnie will ensure your precious works are properly looked after and kept in fine condition with top quality museum conservation practices.
Please bring any work you feel needs professional attention to Bonnie, who will be happy to consult with you regarding your works of art.

Frame It!
Give your photos and other printed works the frame that they deserve! Specialty framing done right here at Artemisia by Georgia Ferrell.
From standard aluminum mouldings to wood taken from old barn siding, frames can be cut to size for that special project. Frames can be gilded, painted, and otherwise decorated to suit your every need.
Come in and speak with Georgia to see how she can help you with your special framing needs.

JURYING FOR 2009

We are starting a new season and are putting out a call to artists to join us for 2009. Please note that we are requesting a cd or email with 6 to 10 photos this year for our initial jurying. We will then request a live presentation from those whose photos meet our requirements.
Please pass this information on to anyone you know who would be interested in having work at Artemisia in 2009.

Well, 2009 couldn't have come in any colder! The last two weeks have been spent mostly trying to keep warm in this no warmer than -15 celcius weather! despite great and beautiful sunshine, it is a cold and 'icicley' time here in eastern Ontario.

However, here at Artemisia we have been very busy preparing for our new season. granted, that doesn't really begin until april, we have learned that as a business it takes a couple of months at least ahead of the calendar to make sure that everything happens when it is supposed to happen! i am not very good at thinking so far ahead, but getting better.

CALL TO ARTISTS FOR 2009

we are doing our jurying slightly differently this year, as we simply do not have the room to accomodate works here at the gallery while we jury. so, we are asking any and all interested artists who are local to the Westport area -- that is within 100 km -- to send us a cd or email with between 6 and 10 representative photos of your work. we will be viewing all photos until april, when we will request from those artists whose work suits our gallery, to bring in actual work for the final jurying.

if you are interested in showing your work in our gallery, but live outside of our local area, please email us and we will consider all canadian artists who apply. artemisia@kingston.net

we will forward details if requested regarding our contract with our artists, concerning commission and fees.

OPEN STUDIO FUN!

beginning on january 28 and 29, and each and every wednesday morning from 11 am to 1 pm, and each and every thursday afternoon from 2 to 4 pm, our workshop will be open to all to come in and create something new, work with other artists and just enjoy yourself and try something new.
each week will focus on a different topic, however, all are welcome to come and bring your own materials and get together with others for creative fun!
cost is minimal -- $50.00 for any ten two hour sessions and $7.00 for each single two hour session. if you want us to provide materials, it will be $3.00 per two hour session.

In this series of open studios, Bonnie will be available to guide you in the basics of drawing and painting, as well as giving feedback for converting your drawings to paintings to create a masterpiece. Bonnie will also be giving tips to help you paint with acrylics and convert your drawings to colourful works of art. aspects of drawing.

This Amazing Polymer Clay * . . . . . . . . . . Georgia Ferrell

A series of open workshops in which we will start with the basics of working with polymer and explore some of the fundamental techniques such as making canes, mokume gane, stamping, basic sculpting, and we will use these techniques to decorate items of home decor. We will also learn a variety of techniques and cover Bottles of Hope which will be donated to our local cancer centers and given to those undergoing chemo and other cancer treatments.

Class dates and times: Mondays, Septermber 22 - Nov. 3, 6 - 9 pm. see also open studio info below.

Fee: $10.00 per session
Material kits with clay and tools will be available for purchase at the workshop for $10.00.

Floorcloths . . . . . . . . . . . . .Isidora Spielmann

....charming and as unique as the hand that creates it, the floor cloth is an easy maintenance, effective addition to one's home. You may need a square to fit under your coffee table, a half moon for the area by the sink or a mat for your entrance. There are no limits to the shape and size or your floor decoration.

Using paint brushes or stencils with acrylics, we have books for inspiration and workshop facilitator Isidora has the experience to help you with design as well as the technical details. If you want to copy a traditional pattern or follow your own ideas, you will find encouragement and enthusiasm with us.

For this beginners one-day-workshop we will limit the size of mat to 2-4 sq.ft.

Please call Isidora 613-273-3359 7-10 days prior to the workshop so we can have the best shape and colours prepared for you. If you have paint brushes or stencils you are welcome to bring them.

Class time: 10 am – 4 pm

Kaleidoscopes ~ The Science and the MAGIC! * . . . . . . .Georgia Ferrell

Part One: Mirrors in this workshop we will learn about mirrors and how to assemble a three mirror system for a kaleidoscope. We will also discuss the various types of scopes and other pertinent information such as lenses, image patterns, etc.

Part Two: Chambers we will also talk about chambers and what to fill them with, and the various types you can assemble. We will assemble a basic chamber.

Part Three: Assembling the basic scope using a simple cardboard tube we will assemble a basic scope.

In this workshop we will learn about kaleidoscopes, a bit about the physics that make the magic.

We will start with the mirror assembly, learn about chambers and eye pieces and then using a simple tube construct a basic tumblescope.

Class date: Saturday, October 4, 2008; OR Tuesday, October 21, 2008
Class time: 9:30 am – 4 pm

Fee: $60.00 plus a materials fee: $15.00 for front surface mirrors, tube, chamber and bits.

A workshop designed for those artists wishing to develop a loose, wet on wet technique using bold colour with an emphasis on capturing light and shadow. Day 1 focuses on techniques involved in peaceful water scenes and day 2 the focus will be buildings with an emphasis on perspective and light and shadow.

Level: Intermediate to Advanced -- knowledge of colours, experience doing washes and wet on wet, stretching and preparing paper. Having participated in other watercolour workshops or classes is also recommended.

Fee: $150.00

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER WORKSHOPS

Handbuilding with clay . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Isidora Spielmann

(youth who can work independently are most welcome)

On two consecutive evenings (one week apart) we will explore various ways of handbuilding with clay: pinching, coiling and slab work. From small cups to dishes, try your hand at a sculptural vase or even a teapot.

The third evening will be used to glaze or paint the one-time fired pieces to give them the look you desire.

Class Dates: November 4, 11 and 25, 2008
Class times: 4 pm – 7 pm

Fee: $75.00 plus a materials fee which includes 20lb of clay and 2 firings $23.00.
A glazing fee to be determined at the workshop.

Papermaking and Card Making . . . . . . . . . . . . Bonnie McLean

Making Paper

In the first two sessions students will learn the basics of papermaking, from learning about materials to familiarizing themselves with the vocabulary and equipment used for papermaking. Starting with raw fibre and proceeding, step by step, to produce a handmade piece of paper. More artistic creations can be worked on, such as embedding foreign objects, laminating and collage making.

Making Cards

In the third session of the series, students will use their own handmade paper to create cards using paint, photographs and other embellishments. So bring photos or other items you wish to use to decorate your cards. Basic materials will be supplied.

Class dates: Session 1 October 29,
Session 2 November 12, 2008
Session 3 November 19, 2008

Class times: 10 am – 4 pm

Fee: $60.00 per session or $150.00 for all three, plus a one time materials fee of $10.00

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER WORKSHOPS

CREATE ! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Georgia Ferrell

This series of workshops is designed to free your creative spirit and will focus on the playful aspect of creating. We will use paints and paper, wire, beads, paper mache, polymer and air dry clays, fabric and textiles, yarns and ribbons. We will stamp and texture, sew and stencil among other techniques. This will be a fun series – come to one or come to all four. Some sessions will likely get messy, so wear old clothes or bring a smock or apron!

Class dates: November 10, 17, 24, and December 1, 2008

Class times: 6 - 9 pm

Fee: $50.00 per session, or all four sessions for $175.00 fee includes all materials

OPEN STUDIO WORKSHOPS

Open studios*

Open studios will be available for anyone interested in working with a group of likeminded artists, with some instruction/advice available.

Fees: $10.00 per session;

Additional open studios in all media will be scheduled as requested by those interested.

Summer Update!

We have been so busy at the gallery, that i haven't had time to update the blog for weeks!

I am happy to say that that is a very good thing, for our artists have been very well received and our sales have been very good. We have added several new artists and now we represent
28 local artists here at Artemisia.

I have also been busy creating a web site for the gallery and our associated businesses -- art conservation; signs, logo design and illustration, and murals; and picture framing.

In the next few blogs our artists will be presented with a photo or two of their work.

We are also now a part of Explore Westport online, in the directory click on art conservation, art gallery, picture framing or signs.

GETTING READY!

We are now in our third week -- my goodness how the days fly! and i want to add our grateful thanks to margaret marcellus and cathy and bob goldsmith for their wonderful gifts for our opening.

here we have set out some of the paintings to begin to set them up for display. it is an amazingly difficult job to find just the right paintings to put together into a grouping that is neither too crowded nor to sparse.

so, we laid some out on the floor to get an idea of how to hang them on the wall.

we also have fiber art and handcrafted games and chess sets, beautifully crafted handbags and porcelain items among our works of art.

AND HERE IS THE FINISHED GALLERY!

many hours after starting to hang the paintings and display the various works, we were satisfied with our work.

A few weeks before we opened, i was visiting my friend valery and with her granddaughter michelle we were trying to think of titles for our various services. i am happy to say that michelle's offering of ARTY PARTY will be used for all our children's programs. thanks, michelle!!!!!

Soon we will also be offering classes and workshops for all ages and all levels. we also hope to have meet our artists special days and evenings, along with poetry readings, music hours and films.

June 21, 2008,

Artemisia ~ gallery, art gift shop, and art services business ~ opened its doors to Westport, Ontario residents and tourists.

We had a great opening day and thank all those who came and expressed good wishes, and to Pat, Thomas and Joyce, who sent lovely flowers to compliment our gallery opening.
